More Upgrades
The soundcard that I currently have in 'BlackFlame Hydra' is an old SoundBlaster Live! Value card that I originally obtained waaaay back in February of 1999 when I picked up my previous PC, 'System-X'. It has chugged along incredibly well- providing countless hours of listening and gaming pleasure.
I've been wanting to upgrade my sound card to something a little more modern for some time now- but just couldn't bring myself to cough up the $100-or-so to replace it. Over time, I've watched the price of these cards come down, but for whatever reason, still haven't bothered to take the plunge. Today I took the plunge.
Thanks to the 'Canada Day Sale' at NCIX.com- I picked up a brand-new SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio 7.1 sound card for just over $50 (including shipping and insurance).
At this stage, I'm somewhat tempted to run both the old SB Live card and this new X-Fi card in the same box. One will be used as my primary sound card- the other I will connect to our entertainment centre so we can (easily) play our entire music collection from the computer- which is quickly becoming a sort-of media server at the same time.
Looks like I gotta go back and recompile the kernel module that supports this card. Good thing I'm in the middle of an upgrade anyway!
