Huh!? Dion to head Liberal-NDP Coalition Government?
http://www.canada.com/topics/news/national/story.html?id=1017065
Um- I think someone needs to explain something to me because I'm obviously a little confused. Let me think this through...
1) Canadian Election held in October- Liberals lose seats, NDP makes a small gain, nothing really changes and we're stuck with another lame Conservative minority (which is a tragedy in itself).
2) As a result of #1 (above), Liberal Leader Stephane Dion announces he will be stepping down as leader of the Liberals in 2009 (May, apparently).
Ok, I'm cool with things so far...
3) Conservatives blow off the global economic crisis, saying it will have a 'minimal impact' on the Canadian economy.
4) A month later, the Conservatives backpedal (a.k.a: LIE) about the economic situation stating that the global economic crisis will affect Canada (admittedly, we're still in better shape than most- and Alberta will likely feel the least effects of the downturn).
Ok, so far I follow- Conservatives lied to us (again), Liberals are regrouping and Dion is on the way out the door.
5) As a result of #4 (above), the Conservative minority is threatened by a projected vote of non-confidence by the Liberals and NDP in the House of Commons. (Makes sense- Flaherty more or less blatently lied about the economic situation, so what other lies have been told by Mr. Harpers government?)
6) The Liberals and NDP announce intentions to form a coalition government to form a majority government and send the Conservatives packing.
WHOOHOO!!
7) The coalition government will be headed by Stephane Dion
Huh? This is where I lose track of things. Dion is leaving politics next year (ya know, that's like 30 days away- okay, he's leaving in May, but still). So why would he head the coalition government? That's like promoting the guy in the office that's given his two-week notice!
It sounds to me like Dion just really really (gee, golly, I wish I wish I wish) wants to have the title of 'Prime Minister' on his resume and will do almost anything he can to do it.
This sounds oddly familiar actually- like a certain American President that became President after countless recounts and a few weeks of the buzzphrase "hanging chads" that just happened to occur in a state where his own brother just happened to be Governor. I'm just sayin'...
It comes across as the guy who lost doing anything he can to be king of the playground so all the kids have to play by his rules for once.
I'm all for the removal of the Conservatives from "power" in this country- and I'm one of the dozen-or-so people in this province that fully support the Kyoto Accord and proverbally throwing a big bucket of ice water on the raging (out of control) fire that is the Alberta economy. (And that's more of a social move as opposed to an economic or political one- someone has to bring these 'untouchable' oil bigwigs down to reality)
But why Dion!?!?
Out of all the middle-to-left wing politicians in this country, you're telling me there is NO ONE better qualified than a defeated Liberal Leader to take the reins?
A few years ago during the NHL playoffs someone had a sign that stated "Phaneuf For Prime Minister". Right now, that sounds like a better option than this!
Hell? Why not? Wouldn't that make a powerhouse in North America? Obama and Dion Phaneuf? Obama can try and talk straight with international representatives on a situation- and if that doesn't work, then Phaneuf can come by and body slam them into the boards and fight 'em until they comply. Now THAT is Democracy at work! ;P
